Professional Network Health Care
Introduction
Professor Chris Barnard performed the first heart
transplant in Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town on the
3rd of December 1967. Today South Africa is still at the
cutting edge of medical and health matters in the fields
of health care, research, primary health care and
therapy. On the other hand South African health policies
are highly controversial in respect of dealing with
HIV/AIDS.
Now you as a health care professional in the fields of
nursing, medicine and health management can experience
the daily challenges of delivering health services in
South Africa. There are many legacies of the past to
deal with which leave daunting challenges for health
policy making and service delivery in the health care
system of South Africa. Meet the people who are facing
these challenges and who are making a positive
difference to the lives of many in all sectors of health
care in South Africa Build life long learning networks
in the beautiful but challenging settings of the South
African society.
The Professional Network Health Care journey to explore
the challenges of the South African health care system
will cater for perspectives from the side of
professional nurses, doctors and health managers.
Overview
Professional Network Health Care provides an opportunity
for nurses, doctors and health sector managers to visit
and explore the hospitals, clinics and education and
training institutions involved with South African health
service delivery. The insights will be provided from the
perspectives of the nurse, the doctor and the health
sector manager respectively. Meet the professional
people who are leading and managing the sustained
challenges of providing quality health services to all
in a highly diverse society. The Professional Network
Health Care tour will focus on health care from the
perspectives of nurses, doctors and health sector
managers showing the challenges from the perspectives of
these professions, but with an integrated focus on the
whole health system.
Given the South African history of apartheid governance
the South African people were faced with many daunting
challenges to overcome the division in South Africa and
to create a visionary new South Africa also in respect
of delivering health services. Learn and experience how
South Africans co-created a world renowned Constitution
providing for health services for all and how they are
now creatively learning how to manage the health
institutions of the state and private sectors for the
benefit of the highly diverse and previously divided
South African population.
The context of poverty and affluence in one society of
diverse people necessitates that the South African
health system uses highly innovative and creative
actions. This creates challenges for all the
professions, people and organisations which have to deal
with the wide spectrum of disease and trauma found in a
developing nation. Issues of quality are linked in with
issues of equity and issues of need come in conjunction
with issues of ethics. In all of this the proud heritage
of people such as Chris Barnard and world class health
facilities has to be maintained.
You can become part of this exciting and challenging
scenario. Professional Network Health Care will provide
you with some of the keys to open the doors to learn and
gain from South African health care experiences. During
some weeks in South Africa you will be given learning
and network opportunities as doctors, nurses and health
sector managers. This is linked to an opportunity to
simultaneously discover and explore the scenic beauty of
South Africa's oceans, mountains, landscapes,
architecture and abundant wildlife.
